Set up a home composting bin

Medium10 points

How to do this

  1. Get a container — a purpose-made compost bin, or repurpose a large bucket with a lid and drilled air holes.
  2. Layer "greens" (fruit/vegetable scraps, coffee grounds) with "browns" (dry leaves, shredded cardboard, date palm fronds).
  3. Keep it in shade — UAE heat dries compost out fast. Add water occasionally to keep it damp, not wet.
  4. Turn the mix weekly with a stick or small fork.
  5. Photograph your composting setup.

Reflection prompts

  • What kitchen waste are you now diverting from the bin? How will you use the finished compost? What did you enjoy about starting this?
